WEEKEND VIBES | CITY, WINDMILLS AND NATURE

Festival Rolling Nature

Last weekend was filled with activities. On Saturday there was the Landelijke Veiligheidsdag - National Security Day here in Almere, where there were all kinds of military, ambulances, police cars, boats, fire trucks, and all that jazz spread around the city center along with activities, fire drills, accident simulations and other fun stuff.

It is a particularly fun day for kids since they can enter inside the vehicles and do all kinds of activities related to military, security, and prevention. It was also fun for us to see up close a lot of stuff that (luck and hopefully) we don't get to see on the daily.

On Sunday it was the first edition of the Rolling Festival that took place at the Oostvaardersplassen. If there's one thing that I like about living here is the ability to be surrounded by nothing but nature in just a few minutes biking. And of course, that if you tell us that there is a festival combining nature and food trucks we've got to be there!

There were a lot of trucks with fun activities for kids, mainly science and nature related. We, the adults, got a tiny bit disappointed with the food trucks since we were expecting to fill up a lot more our bellies, but the organic burger that we had and the nice weather helped to cheer us up.

Oostvaardersplassen is a 52 km² nature reserve where you can find a huge variety of ducks and birds, some ponies and wild horses, wild bulls and cows. We saw some of these animals from De Oostvaarders center using binoculars, but I still want to go there with our bikes and just bike around the reserve.

After this, and because it was the 45st National Windmill's day we also visited one windmill that we used to pass by every day on our way to work and were so curious to see up close - The Meermolen/onrust. Pretty interesting, as many of the windmills, we have visited so far. Especially when you think about the times when they were built.
