This castle, or the remains of it, is situated in Almere, Flevoland in The Netherlands.
I remember the day when we found out about this Castle. We had recently moved to Almere and were living on the seventh floor of an apartment facing a big lake and on the other side of the lake, behind tall trees, I could see what happened to be the roof of this building. It was an Autumn almost Winter day when behind the naked trees I saw something kind of sparkling that intrigued me, to say the least. If I told you all the things that crossed my mind while wondering what it could be. Insane! Anyway, we decided to look for it on Google Maps and found out that it was the remains of Kasteel Almere.
Investigating more about it, we found out that the project started in 1999 and the idea behind it was to build a Castle-looking hotel and wedding venue. The design was based on the Belgium Château de Jemeppe. In 2002 the construction stopped and it remained this carcass castle you see up to this date.
We tried many times to visit it, but in order to prevent any damages there is an anti-squatting team staying there that does not allow you to even get into the terrain, so we could only see it from the outside of the property which is surrounded by water.
It finally seems like there are investors and soon, probably next year, the construction will move on to become the new Which World amusing park. Because of this new project, the gates to the property were opened to the public for a weekend and we couldn't miss the opportunity to finally visiting it up close.
The mystery and curiosity were solved, even though we couldn't get inside the Castle as I was carrying a ginormous pregnant belly and the line was huge. It is funny to think that this is actually the youngest Castle construction I have ever seen.
We don't really know what to expect or what this new project will bring to what it was up until now one quite place to walk or bike around, but sure it is interesting to be part of another development of this young city.
Maybe one day you'll find yourself going to the new amusing park and now you know the history behind it.
