HOW I SURVIVE A MONDAY

SIMPLE TRICKS TO HELP COPING WITH A CRAPPY DAY

Manic

By now you've probably noticed that Mondays are not my nightmare, in fact I like them quite a lot. It feels like a new beginning every week, as if it was the beginning of the year in a smaller scale, if you will. But that doesn't mean I don't struggle with some other day of the week as well.
For instance, in terms of getting out of bed to go to work or run some errands, I am naturally more motivated on Mondays than for example at the end of the week. This is simply because at the end of the week I can feel the fatigue setting down and nothing seems better than my bed whereas in the beginning of the week my battery is usually pretty much recharged to face another chapter. With this being said, finding Mondays or any other day your grumpy/lazy day, this post is for you.
So here are some things that help me cope with a particularly shitty day.
  • Let things prepared on the previous day. Now, this might seem pretty obvious, and that's only because it is! But, being it going to school, going to work or simply leaving the house to exercise or run some errands, I found that I have more motivation to get on with that particular day/task if everything is already arranged and ready to use.
  • Start the day with music! One thing I love and makes a whole lot of difference in my mood is music (or sounds just in general). I can't live without it and, depending on my mood, I can use music to lift me up. So to start a lazy day after partying all night or waking up at every hour, listening to drum'n'bass or hardcore-punk always wakes me up enough to set my mood in order to face another day. Just listen to the kind of music that usually wakes you up. Imagine yourself dancing to it and give it a couple of minutes to get you into the right mood.
  • First drink of the day: A big glass of water! Believe me it makes a big difference! Don't start the day with coffee or any sort of caffeine beverage. Instead give your body time to wake up first. Water will not only prepare your body to digest everything on the way that day, but will also restore the hydration levels lost during sleep. This is a win-win situation! You'll not only feel more energized but your skin and organs will also function better giving you an optimal state throughout the day. Give it some time, like a minimum of 30 minutes after waking up, before drinking your first cup of coffee otherwise you are giving your body a rush of energy that will be lost immediately after, and you will find yourself drowning in another cup of coffee in just about an hour or so. Your body needs to wake up first.
  • Find motivation to get up. Being it watching the sun coming up, running, seeing that person you like, have that so expected meeting, having an ice cream, visiting someone at the end of the day/task you're about to have. You name it.
  • Exercise! I know, I know. I am lazy too. But even if it's only a 5 minute stretch, it will make a great difference. This will relieve your body from any tension and get the oxygen flowing so that your muscles and brain wake up at ease.
  • Be positive about it. I used to get upset as soon as I set foot in my office by just looking at everyone's moody faces in the beginning of the week. I learned to disregard that. So instead of thinking "Oh it's Monday", think it is just another day and it will pass-by before you blink, retrieving your free time to do what you really enjoy doing.
  • Get some me time! The previous day find time for yourself. Take a bath or a relaxing shower, take care of yourself, drink tea, light a candle, read a book. You name it, as long as it is your personal time and what you're doing is what you like.
  • Reward yourself. Last but not least, and because I believe it brings motivation in the future, reward yourself! It doesn't matter if it is a nice dinner out or ordering in, if it is that perfume you've always wanted, a pair of new jeans or simply getting free time for yourself. It is important to have something you look forward to if it's one of those days. For example, being my worse day the last day of the week, I try to arrange something to do with friends after work and so the day will pass-by easier. If at anytime during the day I'm feeling bored or stuck in time, I grab that thought and it always cheers me up.
